The Greeters are the Shrine's official Welcome Committee. At Shrine meetings we welcome everyone with a smile and a handshake. If you have ever attended a Shrine Stated Meeting, you have certainly "ran the gauntlet" of Greeters who are standing on either side of the Shrine entrance. As a Unit, we participate in parades and raise funds for the Shrine's General Fund, as well as other areas. At parades, we are known for our open-sided bus - no walking in parades for us! We also hold events for the Greeters and their ladies. We have had Summer parties and Christmas Parties. In the past, we were known for our annual fundraising breakfast, but starting in 2009 we are embarking on a new direction that we hope will renew interest in both the Shrine and the Greeters Unit. The first concept for the Greeters unit was formed in 1942, when Dr. Charles Webber was Potentate of the Al Bahr Shrine. The idea for the Greeters was created by William "Bill" A. Scroggs, Sr., a newcomer to the Al Bahr Shrine. Bill noticed that visitors and visiting Nobility were standing alone at social events and thought it would be nice if a group of friendly Al Bahr Nobles would make it a point to meet and welcome these visitors as well as the members in order to set them at ease by making them feel welcome. Bill worked up a programme, and made an appointment to meet with Potentate Webber. He presented his idea for the Greeters. Bill said that he would like to create a group of about forty friendly, dedicated, and aggressive Shriners to ensure that all received a warm welcome to the Al Bahr Shrine, and that he would call this group "Greeters." Potentate Webber no only gave his approval, but asked to become a member once his time as Potentate was finished. The Greeters were formed in 1943, with Bill Scroggs as our first President. In the intervening years the Greeters have had many Presidents, including some who have gone on to serve the Al Bahr Shrine as Potentate. Those past Presidents who also have served as Potentate is as follows: Richard Haberlein, President 1971 - Potentate 1978 R. Jay Reeves, President 1979 - Potentate 1990
